centre of Sweden, where it is considered an uncommon bird. It inhabits manyparts of the middle of Europe, and of Asia. It is a trulyAlpine bird, and is, consequently, common in Switzerland, which appears to be a country particularly adapted to itstaste. It is found there above the region of vegetation, and bordering on that of eternal snow. It has even beenknown to remain in Switzerland the whole year in shelteredvalleys, if the season has been sufficiently mild for thesprings to remain open. In countries of a less Alpine character, this bird contentsitself with dwelling among high rocks and cliffs, blocks ofstone or granite. In mountain districts it is very commonin towns and villages: it is seldom seen in forests or woods, seldomer in low and marshy countries, except during migra-tion ; it is, consequently, rare in Holland. In towns and villages on the Continent this species ismuch more common than our Redstart is here ; and seeksthe most elevated parts of towers, houses, churches, and

Itsvocal powers are said to be far inferior to those of the com-mon Redstart, both in quality and compass. This little bird is restless and shy, and although seekinginhabited places, such as cities and towns, appears to do somore on account of the elevated objects such places affordthan from any sociability of character, as they never descendfrom their elevated station, nor appear even in crowded citiesto take much notice of, or to be at all molested by, the noiseand bustle below. The spring and summer are passed by them in theselofty abodes ; and in such places of concealment and safetyas rocks and edifices afford, they bring up their young fami-lies. To this mode of nidification the present species ofRedstart is even more attached than the former one, andits nest is more commonly deposited among the broken wallsof a ruin, about the tower
