pally inthe localities chosen in which to rear their young, and intheir actions. But in these particulars in which they differfrom other birds they strikingly resemble each other. The species under present consideration arrives in Englandabout the middle of April, rather later than the nightingale. On their first arrival they may be heard singing their briskand lively song of invitation to their expected mates, butafter a few days, or perhaps weeks, thus spent, they applythemselves to the more important duties of the season, namely, the construction of their warm and sheltered nests, and the care of their rising offspring. It can hardly besaid that the Redstart confines itself to localities distin-guished by any particular feature ; they are neither strictlysylvan, like the nightingale, nor aquatic, like the blue-throated warbler, nor altogether delighting in rocks and build-ings ; but they appear rather like the redbreast, able toaccommodate themselves to all these circumstances, and to

For instance, with regard tothe locality chosen for its summer residence, this bird isfrequently seen to make choice of a wild and retired situationamong over-hanging cliffs, partly covered with vegetation, andinterspersed with wood, where it appears so shy, that buta momentary glance is obtained of its form, as it hastilyretires from observation. Having observed this, we canhardly believe that it is the same bird that builds under theeaves of inhabited dwellings, and even becomes so familiaras to breed fearlessly in little boxes or jars placed againsta cottage wall for that purpose. Their familiarity is not, however, by any means equal to that of the redbreast, asthey never enter dwellings like that bird, neither do theytrust themselves much nearer to us than the edge of theroof or the top of the wall. But whether the Redstartlocates itself in towns or villages, or chooses the greaterretirement of woods and forests, it still keeps itself
