the breast and all the under-parts pale yellowish-pink ; the two central feathers of the tail are entirely black ;all the other feathers are white at the base, and black to-ward the end of the feather, the black portion decreasingon each feather, so that the outer feather on each side retainsbut a single dark spot; all these are tipped with white. The eyelids are black, and the iris of the eye reddish-brown. The female is ferruginous-brown on the upper parts, tingedon the nape and rump with ash-grey ; under parts greyish- 22-i LANIAD.E. white ; the feathers bordered with a dusky semicircular line. The young of the year nearly resemble the female, but someof the feathers on the rump have a narrow dark border. Its attitudeand general appearance we have represented in our plate. The Wood-Shrike is found in most parts of Europe, from Sweden southward, and inhabits Africa, where it ap-pears to be more generally known than elsewhere. Werather su
