Text Appearing Before Image:
specimen is sometimes obtained, butdoes not appear yet to have fallen into the hands of anyBritish naturalist. It is in its general aspect much darkerthan the one figured; the whole head, neck, and breast, are black, the feathers bordered with reddish white; theband above the thighs is white, crossed with black lines;the thighs and feathered tarsi are rufous, crossed with manynarrow black bars, the black occupying rather the greaterportion : in these specimens the tail is white, banded nearthe tip with a broad black bar, above which are four or fivenarrower bars of the same colour. In some of these speci-mens the throat and sides of the body are quite black, verynarrowly streaked with yellowish white : these are consideredto be the oldest birds. In autumn, after moulting, all aredarker than in the summer, at which time the plumage hasbecome faded. Temminck describes this variety but doesnot say to what age he considers it referable. The egg marked16 belongs to the Rough-legged Buzzard.
Text Appearing After Image:
n.ij HONEY BUZZARD. 83 RAPTORES. FALCONIDJE. PLATE XVII. HONEY BUZZARD.Pebnis Apivorus. (Cuvier.) The Honey Buzzard is of a more slender form than thetwo preceding species, and the tail is longer in proportionto its size, giving to its whole appearance a much lightercharacter. This species, which is now classed among thegenus Pernis of Cuvier, departs still more than the buzzardsfrom the characters attributed to the birds of prey. The beakof the Honey Buzzard is weak and lengthened, the legs arealso rather slender, the toes and claws long, and the latterbut little hooked; and the description of food sought by it isin conformity with these deviations from the Raptorial cha-racters, consisting chiefly of insects and their larvse. The Honey Buzzard is known in most parts of Europe andAsia, with the exception of the colder regions of the North, towhich it is believed not to penetrate. It is spoken of asinhabiting Norway and Sweden, Russia and Denmark,—weconclude as a summer visiter,—i
