o the persons itwas accustomed to see. It lived on terms of perfect friend-ship with many small caged birds, and although the perch towhich it was fastened by a chain often stood within reach oftheir cage, it never made the smallest effort to molest them. This pretty creature would suffer itself to be caressed,and even appeared pleased with attention, and certainlylooked upon us as its protectors. It always evinced greatalarm at the sight of a black cat, which frequently enteredthe garden where it stood, in order to snatch from an aviarysuch of the small birds as should venture near the wires, andseveral luckless goldfinches did fall into its power. On theappearance of this terrible enemy, our favourite Hawk wouldutter redoubled cries until some one ran to its assistance;but if any of its human friends happened to be in sight, ittook no notice whatever of the intruder, as if perfectly securewhen in our presence. The egg represented in the plate, and numbered 11, belongsto the Kestril.

This beautiful little bird, although widely distributedthroughout all the warm and temperate parts of Europe,appears to be nowhere very abundant, especially in this coun-try, if we may judge from the various conflicting accounts ofornithologists and other observers respecting the season ofits appearance in different parts of England, the locality itchooses for nidification, the colour of the eggs, and otherparticulars. Bewick, although inhabiting the northern part of England,where it is now known to breed, describes the female of thisspecies as the Merlin ; and the adult male, which he con-siders a different species, under the designation of StoneFalcon. This error has long since been set at rest; butother discrepancies still exist respecting some portions of itshistory, which prove that the opportunities of observing itshabits are not very frequent.
