| Description |
Rome, summer 2005 This is another view of the Colloseum, without the hoards that swarmed over and around it. Quite a miracle to get a shot without the hoi polloi spoiling the view; they are everywhere in the summer months. It is a massive building and currently undergoing restoration. This was one of the final places our #60 express bus stopped. There is also a metro station right there, and by going through the metro you could climb out to an abutment overlooking the Colloseum and the busy highway beside it. The Colloseum is also at the southern end of the Forum, which is mostly forested hillsides and nice to ramble through, not the rubble of the northern end.. We were home exchanging with a couple who lived in the Montesacro district, a kind of small village of its own in the northernmost part of Rome. We took the #60 express to get here, which was generally a jumping off place for many of the catacombs around Rome, mostly outside the original gates along the Via Appia. |
