Description
English: Colossal head of a statue of Zeus. Marble. Found at Aigeira, Achaia, along with the hand inv. no. 3481. The head belonged to a larger than life-size cult statue of the god, carved by the Athenian sculptor Eukleides, according to the travel writer of the 2nd cent. A.D. Pausanias. The eyes were made of a different material and inlaid. Second half of the 2nd cent. B.C. Accession number: 3377. National Archaeological Museum of Athens. Athens, Greece. Text: Museum inscription.
