Summary

[edit]
Description This is the old Colored Consolidated School, which served students of sub-Saharan African ancestry in Jackson County prior to desegregation of North Carolina’s schools in 1965 following the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The four-classroom red-brick building was constructed in 1960 to replace the previous Colored Consolidated School, a four-room wood-frame structure built around 1925. The building is small in size due to the low number of people of Sub-Saharan African ancestry in the area, with a population of only a few hundred out of the thousands of residents of the county during segregation, being fewer in number than the Cherokee that inhabit the northern end of the county. As a result, the school facility, though modern and well-built, was very small, and provided a smaller version of the larger facilities found at other county schools. Following the closure of the school, the students transferred to Sylva Elementary School, Scott’s Creek School, Webster School, Sylva-Webster High School, and Camp Laboratory School, which served the districts with students that formerly attended the school. Since 1965, the building has served as the Central School Board Office for Jackson County, and many hints of its former function remain in its remarkably intact exterior appearance, as well as many features that can still be seen in the interior.
