Description |
Nederlands: Colon figuur vervaardigd uit hout. Deze antropomorfe, vrouwelijke figuur stelt koningin Victoria voor, getooid met een opengewerkte kroon waaraan zich een sluier bevindt die afhangt op haar rug. De handen zijn op elkaar geplaatst en in de ene hand hout ze een waaier. Niet zichbaar zijn de kleine voeten met hakschoentjes die onder haar jurk zijn uitgesneden.. De maker heeft zich zeer waarschijnlijk laten inspireren door het in 1887 genomen jubileum portret van de vorstin. Het beeld van de koningin beantwoord aan de Yoruba principes betreffende representatie. De vorstin wordt weergegeven als een waardig en machthebbend lid van de maatschappij getuige de waaier die ze vasthoudt, een indicatie van haar hoge status. Aanvullend heeft de koningin een jeugdig uiterlijk meegekregen vrij van ouderdomsverschijnselen om zo haar innerlijke schoonheid en kracht te benadrukken.
Een colon-beeld is een product van de koloniale situatie en mede daardoor bestond er aanvankelijk nauwelijks interesse voor bij Europese verzamelaars en musea. Men kan in het circa honderdjarig bestaan ervan drie periodes onderscheiden: De oudste colon (letterlijk 'kolonist') stellen blanke typen voor met een vleugje ironie of kritiek. Volgens sommige bronnen werden deze beelden soms ook voor magische doeleinden aangewend, om de macht van Europeanen te breken of haar voor eigen gebruik onder controle te krijgen. Vanaf de jaren 1930 werden colon-beelden gemaakt die Afrikanen in dienst van de koloniale administratie uitbeelden, soms vergezeld van hun echtgenote. Het is een soort 'Afrikaanse foto' van de opkomende stedelijke burgerij waarin een verwesterde levensstijl, en vooral het verlangen ernaar, via kleding en allerhande accessoires wordt uitgebeeld. De laatste decennia zijn colon-beelden in de mode geraakt en bestaat er een belangrijke markt voor. Oude stukken worden steeds duurder verkocht en de productie van nieuwe colon neemt toe. Het recentere werk valt daarom onder de categorie van toeristenkunst (door sommigen verguisd als 'Afrokitsch'). |
