bituminous coal;iron and zinc ores; galena, frequentlybearing silver; manganese; gypsum, oil-stone of superior quality; marble; ala-baster; rock crystal; copper; granite;kaolin; marl; mineral ochers, and salt.The State is an important producer ofcoal and of bauxite, the mineral fromwhich aluminum is extracted. Otherminerals produced in considerable quanr-tities are lime, manganese, natural gas,lead, and zinc. The coal production in1917 was 2,228,000 long tons. The pro-duction of zinc is valued at $1,500,000annually. The total value of the mineralproducts in 1917 was $12,061,702. Soil.—The soil varies with the geo-logical characteristics and surface condi-tions already described. Agriculturally,the most valuable soil is found in theriver bottom-lands, and as the surfacerises from these bottoms the soil becomesless productive. There are large sub-merged tracts that only require properdrainage to make them valuable to thefarmer. The uplands generally are welltimbered and well watered.

Of farm and ranch animals themost numerous are swine and cattle. Manufactures.—There were in 19142,604 manufacturing establishments,with 41,979 wage earners. The capitalinvested was $77,162,000; the amountpaid in wages, $20,752,000; the value ofmaterials used, $44,907,000; and thevalue of finished product, $83,940,000.
