Description
English: Collections of the National Maritime Museum, London
English: Clockwork celestial globe, by Isaac habrecht III, Strasbourg 1646: Isaac Habrecht III followed his father and grandfather in the instrument-making trade. The clockwork drives the globe so that it rotates on its polar axis once every 24 hours. The gilt-copper globe is supported by a figure representing Atlas, the Greek demi-god who was responsible for holding up the heavens.
