Summary

[edit]
Description

The Royal Observer Corps (ROC) was a civil defence organisation operating in the United Kingdom between 29 October 1925 and 31 December 1995. During the Cold War the ROC was tasked to provide primary data on the position and magnitude of any atomic weapons that detonated in the UK during any attack.

During an emergency hundreds of small underground "Posts" all over the country would gather the information needed and pass the information to larger control bunkers. As that information was received the data would be written on these boards by "Post Display plotters" every few minutes and the boards rotated so that others in the control room would be aware of the developing situation.

Most of the ROC staff at Posts and Group/Sector controls were volunteers, working with scientists and ROC officers. During the 1980's I was often a Post Display Plotter at the Sector control in Dundee, during exercises.

This example is at the ROC Group Control bunker at York, which is owned by English Heritage and who provide tours daily (subject to Covid restrictions in 2020-1)
