Title |
Colchester two piece brooch (side) |
||
Description |
English: Romano-British Colchester type copper alloy two-piece brooch of abnormal form, spring, pin and catchplate flap missing. Part of the chord survives (now loose). Both wings, in very battered condition, are decorated with two knurled ribs between grooves. On the reverse they are both flat, i.e. they are of D-section. In place of a double-pierced lug the axis bar and chord were held by a double hook, the upper part curving upwards and forward, the lower downwards and forwards. The tapering triangular section bow, which begins not with a crest but with a Dolphin-style hump, is decorated with a knurled median rib. The foot terminal is pointed. The catchplate is not perforated. Length 63mm. Wingspan 33mm. Mid 1st century. |
