Title
Colchester derivative bow brooch
Description
English: A Roman copper alloy Colchester derivative bow brooch. One wing is missing due to old breaks, along with the coil and pin, and the bow has been bent back at right angles, probably due to plough damage. There is much surface corrosion which obscures the decoration down the bow. The wing case is semi-cylindrical, and a fragment of a rear-facing hook can be seen. There is a rib of moulding at one wing terminal, and further ribbed moulding down the bow front. The bow is flat-backed along its upper half, with a shallow catch-plate developing along the lower half. It measures 45.82mm in (unfolded) length, 20.8mm in surviving width, and weighs 7.25g. It has similarities with an example from Hatcheston (Blagg et al, p.94, fig.63, no.76).
