Title |
Colchester 2-piece brooch |
||
Description |
English: Incomplete, copper-alloy two-piece Colchester brooch. The spring is secured by passing the external chord and the axial bar through a lug with two perforations behind the head. The lug is flat and there is no crest extending on to the head. The sprung pin of eleven turns was broken and repaired in antiquity; the pin and three spring turns were replaced with the end of the spring attached under and over the external chord. The wings are almost flat and have two transverse grooves at either end. A v-shaped notch has been removed from the upper edge of one wing in order to accomodate the repaired spring which sits above and behind the axis bar. The gently curving plain bow is circular in section and is broken above the half-way point. The pin is intact, but bent. The bow is 22mm long and the width of the wings is 31mm. |
