Title
Coin of Domitian II (Domitian of Gaul)
Description
English: Description of Find:

The coins range in date from AD 251-279. With the exception of the very rare coin of Domitian II (the second recorded example), the group is broadly similar in composition to the many Romano-British coin hoards (at least 200 so far recorded) buried in the aftermath of the breakaway Gallic Empire. The Gallic empire, whose capital was at the city of Trier but which had held dominion over Britain, was established in AD 260 and reconquered by the legitimate ('central') emperor Aurelian in AD 274.

Summary by reign:

The coins are all of the denomination known as radiates, originally a silver multiple of the denarius, but by this time had become debased to the point of being essentially bronze (c.1% silver). Pottery associated with the Chalgrove II Hoard (by J. D. Hill, dept. of Prehistory & Europe, British Museum)

The vessel is a locally produced Roman period wheel made grey ware jar. (Grey ware is a term describing very common coarse ware fabric with grey surfaces and a grey colour fabric or matrix.) The vessel has a simple flat base 8.5 cm in diameter; a maximum girth of 20.5 cm; survives to a height of 18.5 cm, where the neck originally began. Approximately 75% of the vessel remains complete.
