I was anxious tobecome acquainted with the Akare tribe, which forthe last hundred and thirty years has inhabited theMbomu district between Semio and Kadjema, in sub-jection to the Asandes. The representations of theFrench officials obtained for me from Sultan Semiotwenty-two Akares as bearers, and his son Samuengias interpreter and guide. As soon as I set eyes onthese men my heart sank, for they were the mostpitiable objects I have ever seen. Half-starved andthe victims of sleeping-sickness and leprosy, they werecertainly unfit for long marches carrying loads, andthey were typical representatives of a subject race.I could not believe that the so-called omnipotentsultan, or even the French authorities, were unableto procure me better bearers.
