Summary

[edit]
Description

Coffin case of the priest Bakenmut, created in Egypt about 950 to 900 BC. Found at Deir el-Bahari, Thebes.

Bakenmut was a high priest of Amun, who was extensively worshipped at Thebes. The coffin case is made of sycamore wood. Its yellow paint indicates that the coffin case was intended to magically harmonize with the tomb in which Bakenmut was buried, helping him to fulfill the tomb's religious function even in the afterlife.

The interior of the coffin depicts two deified pharaohs. The large one, in blue is Tuthmosis III. A priest (to the right) offers him a tray of offerings. Below Tuthmosis are two seated mummies of Amenhotep I, seated back-to-back. The images mean that Bakenmut wanted to be associated with these two pharaohs in the afterlife.
