| Description |
English: The first Coffee County Courthouse, built in 1837, burned in 1870. That same year, the citizens of Coffee County felt the urgency to build a new courthouse on the public square. In this post Civil War recovery period, the new building was created with confidence and optimism. J.O. and D.S. Wright of Nashville were the contractors of this two-story building, costing $8,755. Henry Levy was the contractor for the brickwork, costing $2,341. A fancy cupola topped this two-story brick structure. The main entrance faced South. In 1914, an extension was built on the north side. In 1974, the building was admitted to the National Register of Historic Places.
This is a treasured building to the members of it's community. This same building today houses Coffee County Circuit Court, a Tennessee Highway Patrol Criminal Investigation Division office, the Coffee County Historical Society and a University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension law enforcement office. focus.nps.gov/GetAsset?assetID=495ca857-4c31-4645-abf3-f9... |
