Title
Cobalt blue melon bead, 1st-2nd century AD
Description
English: A complete cobalt blue glass bead likely dating from the early Roman period, c. 43-200AD. This bead is classified as a 'melon'. The bead is circular in plan with an even smooth central peforation. While the outer side of the bead is adorned with irregular longitudinal ridges and groves (gadroons) providing the distinctive 'melon' like appearance. It is in very good condition, however much of the surface of the glass has become a touch cloudly although still retaining its colour. This cloudiness is due to the degradation of the glass matrix, in this case likely devritrication as the silica that makes up the glass begins to recrystalise. These beads are most notable from the first half of the roman period (Crummy 1983, 30 and 32; Johns 1996, 101) however they have been noted in some pre-roman cemeteries (Dent 1982, 445-6).

Measurements: 15.64mm in diameter, 8.94mm thick and 1.96g in weight.
