Die Vierteilung des Schildes durch das schlanke Kreuz (»Stabkreuz«) verweist auf das Kreuz Christi. Der silberne Schrägbalken in Rot ist das traditionelle Symbol des Bistums Regensburg. Die silberne Brücke bildet ein weiteres Christussymbol: ER ist die Brücke zwischen Himmel und Erde, Gott und Mensch, Zeit und Ewigkeit. Im Rundbogen der Brücke wird der Schlussstein betont, der mit dem darüber liegenden Stein ein Taukreuz andeutet. Die Brücke korrespondiert mit der Heiligen Schrift in Feld 3. Die Offenbarung Gottes in Jesus Christus (dem Alpha und Omega) wird in der Bibel des Alten und Neuen Testaments bezeugt. Die Brücke zu schlagen von der geschichtlich ergangenen und bezeugten Offenbarung ins Heute, das Offenbarungszeugnis über-zusetzen in den Verstehenshorizont der Gegenwart ist wesentliche Aufgabe des bischöflichen („pontifikalen“) Dienstes: „pontifex“ heißt Brückenbauer. Der Schild wird von den heraldischen Insignien eines Bischofs begleitet: dem goldenen Vortragskreuz und dem grünen Pontifikalhut mit je sechs grünen Quasten (fiocchi). Während dieses Grün für die Hoffnung steht, symbolisiert die Feldfarbe Rot die Liebe. Das Blau in den Feldern 2 und 3 gilt als Farbe des Glaubens, Mariens, des Wassers und des Himmels. Das Schriftband trägt die lateinische Version des Primizspruches von Rudolf Voderholzer: »CHRISTUS IN VOBIS SPES GLORIAE«. Er ist dem Kolosserbrief (Kol 1,27) entnommen und lautet in der Übertragung der Einheitsübersetzung: »Christus ist unter Euch; ER ist die Hoffnung auf Herrlichkeit«. |
