Description
English: Coat of arms of Charles Talbot, 12th Earl of Shrewsbury, KG (later 1st Duke of Shrewsbury):

  • 5: Strange (of Blackmere) (now "Blakemere") in the parish of Whitchurch, Shropshire: Argent, two lions passant in pale gules; a cadet branch of Strange of Knokyn. Richard Talbot, 4th Baron Talbot (c. 1361–1396) married Ankaret le Strange, suo jure 7th Baroness Strange of Blackmere (1361–1413), daughter of John le Strange, 4th Baron Strange of Blackmere (1332–1361). Blakemere Castle was a moated manor house belonging to the Talbot family. The site of Blakemere Castle is situated 2 km N-E of the parish Church of St Alkmund in the town of Whitchurch, the third edifice built on the site of the original Norman "White Church". The Talbots sold the manor in 1590 and by 1695 the manor house was in ruins. The site today is represented by a roughly squared, dry, moat about 60 metres by 60 metres. The moat adjoins Blakemere pool. The deer park was enclosed post-1590 after the Talbots sale of the site. (Source: /www.parksandgardens.org[1])
