English: A crew member from Coast Guard Station Marblehead, Ohio, launches a MK-127A1 illumination flare from the bow of a 45-foot response boat during a search in western Lake Erie, June 21, 2014. The crew used the illumination flare, which reaches an altitude of 650-750 feet, to illuminate the water below in a white lights for up to 36 seconds. It helps aid search efforts in nighttime conditions by increasing the visibility of the search area as if it were daylight. |
