surface plants is usually obtained by burningslack under steam boilers. The efficiency of nearly all ofthese plants is low. At only a few mines has the steam plantthe refinements of the mode 111 manufacturing plant. From1.7 to 4.3 per cent of the output of each mine is burned underboilers at the surface plant. Wasted coal ranges from 0.5 to0.7 per cent. In District IV good combustion under boilers is obtainedat one mine by the use of steam blowers and the slack burnswith no clinkers. Electric power is purchased at a few mines and at onewhere power is purchased at 2y2 cents per kilowatt-hour,three-phase 60-cycle alternating current is brought to theplant at 4000 volts and there transformed to 275 volts. Theinstallation consists of three 15 II. P. motors. An A. C. elec-tric locomotive is used on the main haulage. Alternating 214 COAL MINING INVESTIGATIONS current is reported to be less satisfactory for haulage thandirect, but by using an A. C. locomotive a converter is dis-pensed with.

Often inflammable material, such as empty oilbarrels shown in fig. 65, is stored near the tipple. The fre-quent loss of tipples by fire emphasizes the need of greatercare in the storing of combustible material on the surface. At almost every new mine a steel tipple is built. Fig. 66shows a typical modern surface plant in District VI. Tables39, 40, and 41 give power plant equipment for mines of differ-ent daily outputs. The average cost of preparation where the coal is neitherrescreened nor washed is said by Mr. B. L. Shepard to be3 cents per ton of coal.
