The miners brush the roof at the face, but thesettling as the face advances necessitates a further 1)rushingwhich is done in the LaSalle field by the company. Pig. 57shows the amount of company brushing necessary at onemine after subsidence. This brushing of roof and floor coststhe operators in the LaSalle field approximately 15 cents perton of run-of-mine coal. Labor for haulage costs approxi- 182 COAL MINING INVESTIGATIONS mately 12y2 cents. Maintenance of mules and car repairingcosts 5% cents. The total cost items chargeable to haulageand maintenance of haulage roadways amount to about 33cents in a typical mine with mule haulage on both main andcross entries. The chief reasons for high haulage costs in mines otherthan longwall are failure to keep partings close enough to theworking face to enable gathering mules to fill them with loads
