Summary
[edit]DescriptionCluny, The graveyard - geograph.org.uk - 1041393.jpg |
English: Cluny: The graveyard The graveyard at Cluny Parish Church is dominated by the Fraser Mausoleum. Built in 1808 of grey granite and in the Roman Classical style it is dedicated to Elyza Fraser of Castle Fraser. Around the upper part of the mausoleum is inscribed "ELYZA FRASER OF CASTLE FRASER MDCCCVIII".
Lying in front of the mausoleum there are 4 mort-safes, coffin shaped granite blocks with a "skirt" of wrought iron metal work. A mort-safe was placed over a coffin in its grave and served to keep at bay the bodysnatchers who, in the early 1800s, stole bodies for sale to the anatomy schools in nearby Aberdeen. Once the corpse was corrupt the mort-safe was removed and used in further burials. |
