[edit]
Description
English: On August 30, 2018, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite passed over the Canary Islands and acquired a true-color image of beautiful swirls of clouds trailing the leeward side of the islands.

These paisley-like patterns in the clouds are created by turbulence in the air. As strong winds strike the tall peaks of the Canary Islands, forward motion stops and the air is pushed around the face of the mountains, then to the side then past the obstacle. The changes in the wind speed create spiral eddies, in a regular pattern, on the leeward side of the island. These patterns fade as the turbulence fades far from the islands. The eddies exist on cloud-free days, but the addition of cloud allows them to be seen in dramatic fashion from space.

These particular paisley-like patterns are known as Von Kármán vortices. First described by the Hungarian-American physicist, Theodore von Kármán, the patterns can form nearly anywhere that the flow of fluid (water or air) disturbed by an object.
