Title |
Cloth seal Augsberg |
||
Description |
English: A post medieval lead cloth seal dating to c.1500-1650. It is circular in plan. This two-part seal is of the type used on bales of fustian originating from the Bavarian city of Augsburg. One face bears a capital A with a chevron bar. The opposing face bears unclear traces of a pinecone design. Reference: A very similar seal recorded in 'Lead Cloth Seals and Related Items at the British Museum' by Geoff Egan, (Egan 1994: 106, fig. 41, refs: 308-310) has been attributed to Augsburg in Germany. They are thought to be from mixed linen warp and cotton weft fabric which this city was famed for. |
