Summary
[edit]DescriptionClogherny Chambered Grave (close-up) - geograph.org.uk - 200685.jpg |
English: Clogherny Chambered Grave (close-up) This well preserved monument on the partly cut-away bog near Meenerrigal Rocks consists of a very elegant stone circle of eleven tall schist stones surrounding a wedge tomb orientating towards the south-west and set slightly towards the west side of the stone circle. The tomb consists of a single gallery covered at the north-east by a large capstone. A pair of entrance jambs, formerly capped, stand to the south-west. There is a long sillstone across the entrance and this forms part of the facade. There is a good outer kerb defining a heel-shaped cairn. Oliver Davies excavated the site in 1937. He saw it as an opportunity to investigate the unusual link between the surrounding stone circle and the wedge tomb within. A layer of cobbling, now covered again, was spread between the uprights of the stone circle. No pottery was found in the excavation and the only finds were some burnt human bone and half a barbed flint arrowhead. |
