Title
Clock movement stand
Object type Classification: 96717
Description
English: Wooden clock movement stand, Rhodes Speight 1899 description- rectangular wooden base; rectangular rod extending upwards from base, X-shaped brace on opposite side of base; horizontal wooden bar slotted onto vertical rod with metal teeth resting in the brace. Handwritten on base- "Rhodes Speight - 1899". This clock movement stand was probably made by its first owner, Rhodes Speight in 1899. An adjustable movement stand such as this was intended to hold a repaired movement firmly and visibly, leaving room for its pendulum to swing below it, and allowing the clock to be tested and adjusted before being remounted in its case.
