THE URETHROSCOPE 6j The lantern (a) contains a small Edison lamp, mountedon a cylindrical movable socket (b), and a lens, by which therays of light are reflected along a metal tube (h) passed intothe urethra. The light in this instrument, it will be observed, is placedwithout the body. Several attempts have been made toilluminate the canal by means of lamps passed inside theurethra, but hitherto without much success. The urethral tubes are made of bright polished metal, andare cylindrical in shape. They vary in size from 20 to 28 of

For examination of the urethra as far asthe membranous portion the tubes are straight (Fig. 30) ;for use in the prostatic portion of the canal they are curved(Fig. 31), with a large oval opening on the convexity. Eachtube is supplied with an accurately fitting conductor. To the tube-holder (e) is fitted a glass window (f), whichis air-tight when closed, and a narrow hollow stem, withstop-cock (g), for the reception of india-rubber bellows. Bythis means the canal can, when necessary, be inspected whendistended with air.
