These changes seem to be similarto those set up in other mucous tracts (the conjunctiva?, for instance, inmeasles), and, like them, tend to disappear with the subsidence of the disease.Lastly, we may refer to the action of diathesis and enfeebled states of thegeneral health from any cause. It corresponds here to their actions uponthe body at large. In scrofula, constitutional syphilis, extreme lithsemia,chlorosis, anaemic and scorbutic states, the resistance of the mucous tractsin general is lowered, so that agents of disease easily resisted under betterconditions are here potent for evil.
