Summary

[edit]
Description This is the historic Esquire Theatre, a landmark in Cincinnati's Clifton Gaslight District. Opened in 1911, the theatre continued to remain open for first-run films into the 1950s, when it became an art concept movie house, which it remained into the 1980s, when it shut down due to a lack of patronage. The building was at the center of a major preservation battle in the 1980s, when the neglected building, in very poor shape and vacant for many years, was acquired by a company who wanted to replace it with a Wendy's. Due to the efforts of neighborhood groups and preservationists, the building was saved, reopening in 1990, with the present decorative facade added during the renovation at this time. Another renovation in 1999 expanded the Theatre and added two additional screening rooms, bringing the total capacity to 730 with six screens. Today, the theatre showcases first-run films and remains independent, a rarity in this day and age. The building next to the theatre, a Romanesque Revival-style structure, balances out the theatre very well, especially with its similarly whimsical facade that includes three circular windows at the top of the building. This neighboring building may have also been targeted for redevelopment when the Wendy's proposal came to the district, the rejection of which was upheld by the Ohio Supreme Court in 1987 due to foresight by neighborhood residents and planners who put fast-food restaurants on the list of "inappropriate" land uses for the neighborhood's business district.
