Description

(1 in a multiple picture album) We have been interested in cliff dwellings for many years and the best place to see them (hundreds of them) is in Mesa Verde National Park. The Cliff Dwelling is the largest of these "cities" where hundreds of families lived 1200 years ago. When you look at the craftsmanship it took to build these dwellings from blocks of sandstone you have to admire the skill of these ancient builders. You recognize what an advanced and structured society they had. And then they disappeared. Why? Nobody really knows.

The structures were obviously built to protect the inhabitants from enemy raids. From the top of the mesa you would never know that such a large complex existed below. If you were walking through he canyon the trees would hide the structure from your view. They were very well protected. But something drove them away.
