Title
Prince Prabhakar Performing Austerites and Worshipping the Shiva Linga, from a Lavanyavati of Upendra Bhanja (Indian, died 1740)
Object type painting Edit this at Wikidata
Description
In this scene from a popular romance named after its protagonist, the beautiful Lavanyavati, a prince performed intense austerities in order to obtain a divine woman. At the right, he did yoga in the midst of fires during the hot season. During the rainy season, probably indicated by the lush trees in the middle, he refused to take shelter. After that, he worshiped daily a clay linga, the phallic emblem sacred to Shiva, as seen at the left.
Using palm leaf to make manuscripts was considered superior to paper. In eastern India, suitable types of palm were readily available, and its use continued for centuries after paper replaced palm in other regions.
