Cooking Vessel |

Description |
The ancient Jomon people lived on Japan's coast beginning about 10,000 BC. Their settlements have revealed numerous artifacts essential to everyday life in a hunting and gathering society. This cooking vessel was formed by piling coils of clay atop one another, smoothing and thinning the body walls and then adding surface decoration. These designs consist of impressed rope patterns and vertical "squiggle" lines cut into the body to help organize the surface decor. The flaring upper body is an impressive feat of ceramic construction and design, much admired by contemporary ceramic artists. |
