Three Panels from a Casket with Scenes from Courtly Romances |
|||||||||||||||||||||||
Description |
These ivory panels, along with others, once adorned a large casket. Their crowded carvings explore romantic and chivalric themes, suggesting that the box may have been a courtship gift. In the center panel, knights joust. To their right, knights besiege a castle in hopes of capturing its ladies. At the left is the siege’s aftermath, a knight riding away with a lady astride his horse. |
