Clethras are mostly pleasant pale flowered deciduous shrubs rather than show-stoppers. Delavayi however is a magnificent thing with larger, more strongly textured leaves (to 6ins) and more substantial flowers. The effect is enhanced by the fawn scurfy stems and calyces and the black parts within each flower. This autumn display has been an unexpected bonus. On the down side, delavayi has a reputation for being somewhat tender but came through last winter unscathed. It can also take up a lot of space eventually... |
