Transcript InfoField | Cleopatra's Needle. This obelisk of red granite was carved by Syrenian artificers more than 3,000 years ago. For 14 centuries it stood before the temple at Heliopolis, then was carried to Alexandria by order of Caesar Augustus. Mehemet Ali made a present of it to England, but it was not removed until 1877. The Needle was nearly lost in the Bay of Biscay, but was safely brought home in January, 1878. |
