Forest Service personnel, joined by representatives of six federal and civilian partners, cleaned more than 6,000 lbs of trash and 7,000 lbs of irrigation pipes from an illegal marijuana cultivation site on the Lassen National Forest, Oct. 17-20, 2016. The site contained three large camps, numerous dumping locations and more than 1,250 lbs of fertilizer and pesticides. The cultivation operation was growing between 16,000 and 20,000 plants along Screwdriver Creek, a tributary of the Pit River which drains into the Shasta Lake Reservoir and the Sacramento River. Water diversion and contamination by pesticides from the site have adversely effected Screwdriver Creek. The Screwdriver Creek clean-up is part of a two-week operation, spearheaded by the Lassen National Forest, involving multiple grow sites. If the work being done were to be contracted, the cost would likely exceed $1 million. By managing the reclamation itself and enlisting help from partners, the Forest Service anticipates the cost to be closer to $250,000. |
