Title
Clay pipe bowl with scored heel (no 1).
Description
English: Two clay pipe bowls, dating to 1640-1680 (most likely 1660-1680). Both have an oval heel which is scored with a straight line widthways. Both have a rouletted rim. Both appear to be unused. The stem is broken off one of the bowls, the other has c.25mm of stem. Bowl 1 (with stem) weight 12.45g, Bowl 2 (no stem) 10.50g. White, in Davey 1979 (The Archaeology of th Clay Tobacco Pipe) publishes a number of 17th century clay pipe bowls from Vicar's Court, Lincoln, with similarly scored heels, and suggests that they should be "best understood as some sort of batch mark".
