Description

À 18 ans, il s'engage dans la Marine française, alors contrôlée par Vichy, pour essayer de rallier les Forces françaises libres.

En 1942, lors du débarquement allié à Alger il rallie l’Angleterre à bord d’un navire des Forces navales françaises libres. Là, il reçut une formation à la détection sous-marine (ASDIC) avant de s’embarquer sur une corvette, la Lobelia, prenant ainsi part à la bataille de l’Atlantique. La Lobelia fut plusieurs fois décorée pour avoir coulée des U-Boot.

Après le Débarquement du 6 juin, il apprendra que son père et son frère sont morts le 6 juin 1944 sous les bombardements alliés.

Il décède le 3 mars 2020 « La notion d’engagement était forte dans notre famille et ma mère m’a particulièrement motivé pour ne pas accepter la défaite et rejoindre la Grande-Bretagne. J’espère, disait-il, que mon témoignage servira aux jeunes générations ». Claude André était le dernier soldat de la France libre en Normandie.
