Birbhum, a district somehundreds of miles away, and brought to Calcutta,where his right thumb impression was again taken,and the police in the meantime set about collectingcorroborative evidence. The Chemical Examiner toGovernment certified that the brown marks on thecalendar were mammalian blood, the inference beingthat the actual murderer or some associate hadknocked his blood - stained thumb against thecalendar when rummaging amongst the papers inthe despatch box for the key of the safe. Theaccused was committed to stand his trial before ajudge and assessors, charged with murder and theft,and finally was convicted of having stolen themissing property of the deceased, the assessorsholding that it would be unsafe to convict himof murder, as no one had seen the deed committed,but recording their opinion that the charge of thefthad been conclusively established against him. Thisconviction was upheld by the judges of the SupremeCourt, to which the case was taken on appeal. FINGER PRINTS
