Summary
[edit]DescriptionClass 141 railbus, Leeds station - geograph.org.uk - 632397.jpg |
English: Class 141 railbus, Leeds station In the early eighties, these vehicles were introduced on several services in the north of England. They were cheaply constructed by using many standard components from the bus industry. Each car has only four wheels, whereas four-wheel carriages had started to be phased out before the first world war in favour of the more comfortable bogie stock. While the railbuses rode reasonably well on plain track, once they encountered points the riding became extremely rough: this, combined with the discomfort of the seating, the noise, and the persistent smell of diesel fuel which always attended these vehicles, must have been instrumental in causing many passengers to transfer to private motor cars for their transport needs. Sadly, many of a similar type of vehicle are still employed on some northern services. |
