Clark's Hotel seems to have used postcard effectively to promote itself at the turn of the century. From an 1875 Benares Guidebook: "We will now proceed to inform the traveller how he is to act on arrival at the East Indian Railway station at Mogul Serai, where passengers for Benares change trains. He will no doubt be pested by a number of touts, who instead of guiding his to the best hotel in Benares, which Mr. Clark's undoubtedly is, will each be noisily advocating the merits of the hotel which gives him service. He should dismiss these pests of the travelling community by intimating at once that he has made up is mind to proceeds to Clark's Hotel, where he will undoubtedly find a good repast ready, and if he arrives by the 6:35 p.m. train, an excellent dinner provided by the Proprietor always awaits the traveller. . . . I think I am doing the public a service in mentioning that His Excellency Lord Napier of Magdala and the Hon'ble Justice Turner have granted certificates to Mr. Clark–recommendations from these gentlemen being sufficient guarantee to the travelling public of the respectability of the hotel." The hotel still survives under the same name in a modern building today.
