Description
English: "I crept round once more, trying to give them at least a drink of water to cool their parched lips and I heard them at last speak of mothers and wives and sweethearts, but never a murmur or complaint. Then I woke to hear myself groan because I have a stupid pain in my back, that's all. Here on a good bed, with every attention. I am ashamed that I murmur." Clara Barton spoke these words on April 10, 1912 as she lie dying in her bed at her Glen Echo home. She had been hovering at the edge of life for several months, coming in and out of consciousness as pneumonia battered her 90-yr old body. On april 10, she suddenly awoke and began telling her dear friend and doctor, Julian Hubbell, who was at her bedside throughout her illness, of a dream she had where she was reliving her times on the battlefield. After these brief moments of speed, she would again lose consciousness. Pictured: Clara Barton sitting on the front porch of her Glen Echo home.
