Summary
[edit]DescriptionClach na Criche or Wishing Stone - geograph.org.uk - 1036358.jpg |
English: Clach na Criche or Wishing Stone The Wishing Stone was a regular stop between Lochaline and Drimnin Grave Yards. If someone from Lochaline died and wanted to be buried in Drimnin the cortege would stop at the Wishing Stone. Everyone went down on to the beach and lifted a stone and a cairn was built to commemorate the deceased. The coffin, in earlier days was carried by cart and the mourners walked the twelve miles between Lochaline and Drimnin. The same custom applied for those from Drimnin who wished to be buried in Lochaline. The custom has recently started again, though the mourners now use cars.
Also a spring or well is said exist hereabouts. You are supposed to take a mouthful of water and pass through the hole in the Wishing Stone with the water in your mouth and make a wish at the same time. Again it is a ongoing custom. |
