This greenhouse is no longer existing. Although other greenhouses, as of the 17th century, had been in use in the Jardin des plantes in Paris, that one was the first to be called jardin d'hiver ("winter garden"). Designed by architect Jules André, construction works for this large greenhouse began as of 1881. It was finally inaugurated in 1889. In 1934 it was demolished in order to be replaced, at the same site, by the new jardin d'hiver that is still in use nowadays. The new jardin d'hiver, inaugurated in 1937 according to plans of Félix Berger, has been renamed in 2010 as serre des forêts tropicales humides ("Tropical Rainforest Greenhouse").
