Asphalt pavement ranks first in extent of use and insatisfactory qualities, being fairly durable, and cleanerand less noisy than brick. Vitrified brick, the latestand best types of wooden blocks and the morerecent bituminous macadam, are its rivals for publicfavor. HISTORV OF ASPHALT PAVEMENTS. The original pavements were made in Paris in 1854and were formed of pulverized natural asphalt rock,mined at different places in France and Switzerlandand Sicily. This rock is a natural combination ofeighty-eight per cent of amorphous carbonate of lime,with twelve per cent of mineral tar or bitumen, form-ing a bituminous limestone, and is generally used forthe comparatively small amount of asphalt pavementsin European cities. A similar combination of sandstone and seven percent to thirteen per cent by weight of bitumen is knownas Kentucky sand-rock asphalt, and
