The stone rails were made four inches thick andwere roughly cut eighteen inches to twenty-four incheswide, of any length from two to eight feet, with squareends to be laid close together and with both faces flatto permit of turning over when w^orn. The slabs nowshow a concave surface worn one to two inches at thecenter. They were bedded in the gravel and brokenstone of the roadway, by two men at the rate of 125 feetper day or one and one-half cents per running foot, thecost of the stone delivered ready to lay being thirteencents per running foot. This made the wheel trackscost $1,530 per mile while the cobble paving two feetto three feet wide between the tracks and five feet wideon each side of the tracks cost $1,610 per mile: Form-ing the roadbed cost $160 per mile, or a total of $3,300per mile completed.
